Our specialists at Paul Davis are the ones to call when your home or business takes on water damage.

Preparing for the Professionals

It can be tempting to try and fix the leak yourself. That said, we recommend leaving the work up to the pros. However, there are some measures you can take before the restoration professionals arrive. You need to move quickly to salvage the possessions in your home from water damage.

Do not enter your property until you know it’s safe. The dangerous combination of water and electricity makes a flooded home a risky place to enter. Turn off the main breaker before entering your home. Even if they look undamaged, home appliances can be dangerous when touched by water.

First Things First

A severe flood in your home can leave furniture and possessions wet. To prevent water damage from harming small items, move them before larger items. Use a dry, stable surface to lay books, magazines and other paper items. Newspaper and paper or inked items should go on a dry, stable surface. This also includes little tabletop items, such as lamps and knickknacks. The hard work begins when you’ve moved books and other small items.

To dry your home, use fans or air conditioning. Soak up water from wood furniture and smaller surfaces. Though you may want to try, do not use a regular home vacuum to remove water. These appliances aren’t equipped to clean up pools of water. To avoid further water damage, use wooden or cement props to raise heavy chairs above the floor.

Fabrics and carpet are particularly heavy when soaked. This additional weight makes rugs, leather goods and fur difficult to move. If you must move a large fabric item, lift carefully. Hang draperies, clothing and other fabrics away from the wet area to dry thoroughly. Keep in mind that water damage can affect these items permanently, so you might not be able to salvage them.

In severe flooding situations, the additional water weight can damage the structural integrity of your property. Ceilings and floors may bend when they absorb too much water weight, it’s best to stay away from these areas.
