Use These Tips to Stay Afloat During a Flood

If you look over national news feeds, you will probably find multiple places that have experienced floods recently. Flash floods are the most common weather disaster in the nation. Floods are able to start carrying objects away in as little as two feet of water, even a car!
To help you and your family survive a flood disaster, we’d like to share five flood preparedness tips to celebrate National Preparedness Month (NPM).

  • #1. Create a Plan – It’s extremely important to develop a family emergency plan. Once the plan is created, rehearse and review it with your family. To make this process easier, Paul Davis has a form you can print using the link at the end of this post.
  • #2. Develop an Emergency Kit – Make sure you have the following items: a first aid kit, water (a gallon of water per person for at least 3 days), battery-powered radio, signal whistle, dust masks, moist towelettes, garbage bags, pliers, and local maps.
  • #3. Clean Your Gutters – Clear all debris from gutters and downspouts; to help water flow, it is vital that the drains are not clogged.
  • #4. Look at Flood Maps – Know the flood risk in your area and secure proper insurance. It’s critical to know if you are in a severe flood area. Please click the link at the end of this post to view flood maps in Chagrin Falls.
  • #5. Understand Flood Terms – Know the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning. When a flood watch is issued, it means that there is a chance a flood will occur in your area. A flood warning is saying that a flood is headed your way and that you need to be prepared.
